Happy Friday! Our family is on vacation next week, so there will be no Coffee Break. It will be back up on Monday, August 21st.
Theology Learned in the Flames of Adversity
This article is an excerpt from Steven Lawson’s contribution to Legacy of Luther. I love all of the rich history and application packed into this little article. “Luther maintained that theology is not learned only in the safety of a lecture hall, but in the flames of adversity. in fiery trials, one is humbled and broken. It is then that a leader is made most teachable. in difficult times, the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit often shines brightest. Broken hearts make for receptive minds.”
Solar Eclipse Quiz
This is a quiz from National Geographic. It might be fun to do with the kids if you are learning about this big event. How much do you know about the solar eclipse? Oh yeah, and if you scored as poorly as me, then you might want to watch the educational video as well (same link.) Also, heads up, excuse them as they (as usual) tout theory as fact. Still, I thought it was interesting and fun.
Do you have a tiny inner pharisee? Find out in this article from Josh Moody. “The Pharisees are boogeymen among evangelicals, and as such, it is hard to conceive that we ourselves might be Pharisees. They are other people—bad people, legalists, judgmentalists, those who attack Christ and defend fake, hypocritical religion. “Hypocrites” is the most important descriptor. Pharisees act as if they are righteous; while they “strain out a gnat” of sin, they “swallow a camel” of evil (Matt. 23:24). They travel over land and sea to win a single convert, only to make him twice a son of hell as before (Matt. 23:15).
Surely, we are not them.”
Six Life-Changing Sermons
In this article Jesse Johnson shares six sermons that have impacted his life. “As I look back at my Christian life, I can think of a few sermons that I do remember. In fact, I don’t just remember them, but I continue to feel their effects years after having heard them for the first time. They exposed truth that reverberates in my heart even today.”

Restoring Worship of the Holy Spirit (29 minutes)
Romans 8:26-29 “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren…”
